Missing ornament can either be repaired or replaced and properly secured, as on half of this genuinely old frame and portrait. c 1800
This is a working example that I use to explain and show (front and back) what can be done when this type of work is required. This particular canvas hides many secrets that I will show you.
After frame ornament repairs regilding can be expensive is fragile again and looks too bright needing another 100 years or so to look properly old again.
Modern materials and ageing methods can be a very good alternative. Many subtle shades colour tints or plain old dirt colour can really enhance the frame to match the artwork, so they compliment each other.
